Chilled out lunch at Simons in Constantia

The beautiful Sundays just keep coming in Cape Town. This week we returned to the stunning Constantia Valley for a relaxed lunch under the trees at Simons.

Simons is the last restaurant on Groot Constantia wine estate – just keep driving past all the vines to the end of the road and you’ll find it. There were quite a few kids in our party, so thoughtfully they seated us outside under the trees so they could run around and we could keep an eye on them. And the views across the vineyards are beautifully. Just perfect.

Here’s a taster of the dishes we enjoyed.

I seem to be sampling souffles all over the place! Well, this is my second one in a few weeks and was beautifully cheesy with a luscious sauce.

There’s a delightful-sounding selection of salads and sandwiches, an excuse to go back and try something more. This superior steak roll is an example.

I’d seen a picture of this pork chop on facebook last year and was salivating at the thought of it. So when I saw it was still on the menu it was an easy choice to make. Really delicious with a nice spicy jerk crust. And it’s enormous – I actually took half of it away and sliced up with a bit of lettuce and chutney it made beautiful sandwiches for lunch. Don’t be shy to ask to take your leftovers home, restaurants are very happy to package them up for you – I certainly couldn’t bear to leave this behind!

One of the specials of the day was this West Coat sole with mash and vegetables. Sole is a beautifully sweet fish and this is the perfect light summer’s dish.

For carnivores Simon’s steaks are always a good order. You can choose from a range of sauces to go with them, the mushroom one is particularly good. Oh, and the chips are wonderful, too.
