The Magazine Restaurant in Hyde Park

So today I’m eating at a new restaurant in one of London’s parks, of which there are plenty, big and small. When I first moved here I lived very close to Regent’s Park and spent many hours wandering through the rose garden or reading on one of the benches with the sound of hippos in the background. It made me feel less homesick. I wasn’t hallucinating – London Zoo is in Regent’s Park and hippos do make quite a noise!

Most parks have lovely little cafes in them, perfect for a cup of coffee or glass of wine when you feel like you want to get out of the city for a bit. And all without having to actually get out of the city.

So imagine my excitement when I heard about the opening of a new restaurant (on November 1) alongside the Serpentine in Hyde Park. The building’s designed by famous Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid – she designed the Aquatic Centre in the Olympic Village for London 2012. If you watched any of the swimming you’ll recognise her style from a distance as you approach. Funky, modern, white and shiny. It feels a bit like you’re at a wedding (in a good way) when you’re inside because of the freshness and whiteness. Tables are in different geometric shapes and are either white, lime green or black. All making for a very striking interior, too.

The building was a former 1805 gunpowder store – hence the name of the restaurant which did have us baffled for a while! Working in publishing I was thinking Vogue not guns, obviously. Get it?

The Thai beef salad was absolutely delectable. Bursting with fresh flavours and ingredients.

The ultimate in Thai beef salads?

I’d never seen lamb tartare on a menu before. It was beautifully rich and served with lots of tasty extras like radishes and mustardy sauce.

The intricate guinea fowl dish was a marvel of flavours and textures with fabulous autumny celeriac at the base.

The cod dish was light and aromatic.

A novel and lovely experience that’s something truly different and the food’s great, too. And you simply have to go for a walk in the park beforehand. I’d forgotten how stunning Hyde Park is, especially by the water. And I simply couldn’t resist the chance to add a picture of the beautiful Serpentine Lake. Enjoy!
